What Size LED Flood Light Do I Need? A Lebanon Buyer's Guide

For most Lebanese homes and small businesses, the right LED flood light size is 30W to 50W for an entrance, balcony or small yard, 100W for a driveway or a house facade, and 150W to 200W for a large yard, a parking area or a worksite. Mount it 3 to 6 metres up, aim it down at roughly 30 to 45 degrees, and buy for the area you actually need to see rather than the biggest number on the shelf. A 100W LED flood light running six hours a night uses about 18 kWh a month, which at the September 2026 generator tariff of 48,241 LBP per kWh works out to roughly $9.70 a month. The same job done by an old 500W halogen costs about five times that. What size LED flood light do I need?

Sizing a flood light is a question of area, mounting height and how much detail you need to see. Security lighting where you want to recognise a face needs more light than a decorative wash up a stone wall. Use this table as your starting point, then go up one step if the fixture will sit higher than 6 metres or if the surface is dark stone or dark paint.

Two fixtures at half the wattage, placed at opposite corners, almost always beat one big fixture in the middle. Light from a single point casts hard shadows behind cars, walls and plants, which is exactly where you do not want a blind spot. If your budget allows only one unit now, mount it where it covers the entrance, and add the second later.

What LED wattage replaces my old halogen flood light?

If you are replacing the old halogen units that were standard on Lebanese buildings, the industry rule of thumb is to divide the halogen wattage by roughly ten. Modern LED flood lights reach efficacies of 100 to 150 lumens per watt, according to lighting manufacturer guidance, while a halogen lamp puts most of its energy out as heat.

Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee. Wattage is an input, not an output. Two 100W flood lights from different factories can differ by thousands of lumens, so check the lumen figure and the beam angle on the datasheet before you commit to a large order. What does a flood light cost to run in Lebanon?

This is where the halogen swap pays for itself. Lebanon's Ministry of Energy and Water set the private generator tariff for September 2026 bills at 48,241 LBP per kilowatt hour, or close to $0.54, the highest rate since April, as reported by L'Orient Today on 1 September 2026. At six hours of use a night, here is what outdoor lighting actually costs on generator power.

Swapping one 500W halogen for a 50W LED saves roughly $43 a month at that tariff, which pays back a $15 fixture in under two weeks. Warm white or daylight: which should I choose?

Aura Lighting flood lights come in warm white 3000K and daylight 6500K. The choice is not cosmetic, it changes how the space reads at night.

• 3000K warm white suits stone facades, gardens, terraces and restaurant exteriors. It flatters natural stone and traditional Lebanese architecture, and it is far less likely to annoy the neighbours.
• 6500K daylight suits security lighting, parking, workshops, gates and loading areas. The cooler light makes edges, plate numbers and faces easier to read on a camera.

On a mixed property, use 6500K on the gate, driveway and parking, and 3000K on the facade and garden. If CCTV is the main reason you are lighting the area, choose 6500K everywhere the cameras look.

When is a flood light the wrong choice?

We would rather sell you the right fixture once than the wrong one twice. A flood light is not the answer in these cases.

• Indoor warehouses, factories and gyms. A flood light aimed down from a high roof wastes light on the walls. A high bay fixture has the correct optics for that job, and our 200W LED high bay at $49 is both cheaper and better suited than the 200W flood light.
• Roads, long driveways and pathways. These need a street light or a linear fixture that throws light along the path, not a wide beam that lights a circle and leaves dark gaps between poles.
• Where the light will spill onto a neighbour or into a bedroom window. A 200W flood light aimed carelessly is a real nuisance, and in dense areas it is the fastest way to get a complaint. Aim down, drop the wattage, or use two smaller units.
• Decorative lighting on a small feature. A flood light has a wide beam by design. To light a single tree, a statue or a niche, a narrow beam spot gives a much cleaner result.
• Somewhere with no mains wiring at all. Running a new circuit for one small light is rarely worth it. A self contained solar wall light makes more sense for a far corner of a garden.

What should I check before buying?

1. The IP rating. Outdoor fixtures in Lebanon face winter rain, coastal salt air and Bekaa dust. Confirm the IP rating on the datasheet before you install.
2. The input voltage range. Mains voltage on a generator or an inverter swings more than it should, and a wide input range gives the driver room to cope.
3. The bracket and the angle. Fix the bracket into solid masonry and set the angle at dusk, not at midday.
4. The cable entry. Water gets into a fixture through the gland far more often than through the glass. Use a correctly sized waterproof gland and do not leave the entry facing upwards.
5. Whether it will be switched by hand. If nobody will remember, plan the photocell or timer in at the same time, not a year later.

How much area does a 100W LED flood light cover?

Mounted 4 to 6 metres up and aimed down at about 30 to 45 degrees, a 100W flood light comfortably covers a house facade, a courtyard or a small yard of roughly 100 to 200 square metres for security purposes. Coverage depends on the beam angle and the surface colour, so check the beam angle on the datasheet: a narrow beam throws further but lights less width.

Can I run an LED flood light on a solar or inverter system?

Yes. Standard 220V AC flood lights run from the AC output of an inverter exactly as they do from mains or generator power. This is one of the strongest reasons to move from halogen to LED: a 50W fixture draws a tenth of the battery capacity a 500W halogen would.

Is a higher wattage always brighter?

No. Wattage is the power the fixture consumes, and lumens are the light it produces. Efficiency varies significantly between manufacturers, so a well made 100W unit can out perform a cheap 150W one. Always compare the lumen figures on the datasheets, not the wattage on the box.
