What does generator power actually cost in Lebanon right now?

The Ministry of Energy and Water re-sets the private generator tariff every month, based on that month's average diesel price plus operating costs and the operator's margin. For August 2026 bills the ministry set the rate at 48,241 LBP per kilowatt hour, with a further 10% added in remote or sparsely populated areas. At roughly 89,500 LBP to the dollar that is about $0.54, rising to $0.59.

On top of the metered rate sits a fixed monthly subscription fee, 385,000 LBP for 5 amps and 685,000 LBP for 10 amps as of mid 2026, or about $4.30 and $7.65.

Two things matter about that number. First, it is roughly four to five times what households pay in most of the region. Second, it moves every month with the price of diesel. August was the highest rate since April, and nobody buying generator power today knows what they will pay next winter. That price risk is the part a battery removes.

What does a 16kWh battery cost per kilowatt hour?

A battery does not make electricity. It stores it. So the honest comparison is not "battery versus generator" but "solar plus battery versus generator", and the cost per kilowatt hour has to include the panels and the inverter.

How long will a 16kWh battery run a Lebanese home?

What else do you need besides the battery?

Three things, and none of them are optional.

One practical note on siting it. The unit is 110 kg, measures 520 by 240 by 781 mm and is rated IP30, so it belongs indoors on a solid floor. Its charging window is 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. An unventilated store room in a Lebanese August will hit that ceiling and the battery management system will throttle charging, so give it airflow.

When is the generator still the better choice?

Three cases, honestly.

  • You use very little power. At 3 kWh a day your generator bill is around $57 a month, and payback on the same hardware stretches past five years.
  • You rent, or you rent short term. A 110 kg floor standing cabinet plus roof mounted panels is not a system you move easily, and most landlords will not let you drill the roof.
  • You have no roof or balcony. Without somewhere to put 3 kW of panels the battery has nothing to charge from except the grid, and the economics change completely.

There is a fourth honest caveat that applies to everyone: a long run of cloudy winter days in the Bekaa or the mountains will not fully refill the battery. Most households keep the generator subscription for the first winter and drop it once they see their own numbers.

Which should you choose?

Choose the 16 kWh battery if you use 8 kWh a day or more, own your home, and have roof or balcony space. At that level of consumption you are handing the generator operator $1,650 or more a year, the hardware pays for itself inside three years, and you get silent round the clock power in the bargain.

Choose the 8 kWh option if you are in an apartment covering essentials rather than air conditioning, or if you want to start smaller and add capacity later. Stay on the generator if you use under 4 kWh a day or you rent.

If you are unsure which side of the line you fall on, take last month's generator bill, divide the amount by the tariff for your area, and you have your daily kilowatt hours. That single number decides it.

Can I charge the Hithium HeroEE 16 from EDL or a generator instead of solar?
