Maxwell K type thermocouple compensation cable, supplied on a roll. Compensation cable (also called thermocouple extension wire) carries the millivolt signal from a K type thermocouple back to a PID temperature controller, temperature indicator or data logger. It is made from alloys chosen to match the K type thermocouple's EMF characteristic over the ambient temperature range, so the measuring circuit stays accurate all the way to the instrument terminals.
This is why you cannot extend a thermocouple with ordinary copper wire: joining copper to the thermocouple leads creates an unwanted junction and a temperature reading error. Using K type compensation cable moves the cold junction to the controller's terminals, where the instrument's cold-junction compensation can correct for it. A K type sensor must always be extended with K type cable — J type or plain copper will give a wrong reading.
The 2 x 7/0.2 mm construction means two cores, each made up of seven 0.2 mm strands, giving roughly 0.22 mm² per core. Stranded cores keep the cable flexible for pulling through trunking and conduit and for wiring inside control panels. Use it to connect thermocouple probes to Maxwell FT series PID controllers and other temperature instruments on ovens, furnaces, kilns, dryers, extruders and process heating panels.
