Maxwell J type thermocouple compensation cable, supplied on a roll. Compensation cable (also called thermocouple extension wire) carries the millivolt signal from a J type thermocouple back to a PID temperature controller, temperature indicator or data logger. It is made from alloys chosen to match the J type thermocouple's EMF characteristic over the ambient temperature range, so the measuring circuit stays accurate all the way to the instrument terminals.
This is why you cannot extend a thermocouple with ordinary copper wire: joining copper to the thermocouple leads creates an unwanted junction and a temperature reading error. Using J type compensation cable moves the cold junction to the controller's terminals, where the instrument's cold-junction compensation can correct for it. A J type sensor must always be extended with J type cable — K type or plain copper will give a wrong reading.
The 2 x 7/0.2 mm construction means two cores, each made up of seven 0.2 mm strands, giving roughly 0.22 mm² per core. Stranded cores keep the cable flexible for pulling through trunking and conduit and for wiring inside control panels. J type is widely used on plastics machinery, so this cable is a common choice for connecting probes to Maxwell FT series PID controllers on extruders, injection moulding machines, ovens, dryers and process heating panels.
